2587 V.6 Objective lens 1665 Giuseppe Campani, Rome Glass Diameter 137 mm |
|
Description Biconvex objective lens belonging to terrestrial telescope V.51. The aperture of the lens is 111 mm, the focal length 111.6 mm. It was given by its maker Giuseppe Campani to Ferdinando II de' Medici, as shown by the dedication engraved on the glass along the circumference: "Ferdinando II. Serenissimo Magno Etrurie Duci. Joseph Campani faciebat Romae anno 1665". The glass has a reddish tint, that, however, does not alter its transparency, which is nevertheless reduced by some bubbles. The lens is well worked, but has some scratches. |
